What is Poliomyelitis?
Poliomyelitis, commonly known as Polio is a communicable disease, caused by the virus living in intestine and throat. It is transmitted through contaminated water or food and is a viral infection that affects the nerves of the spinal cord. This infection causes permanent paralysis of muscles, mostly affects children up to 15 years of age.
A few years back, it was one of the major causes of disability. After the introduction of Polio vaccination, this disease has been eradicated in several countries including India. Until completely eradicated, the government plans to regularly schedule Polio vaccination programs. Let's understand a bit more on the Polio types:
3 Stages of Poliomyelitis:
I. Abortive Poliomyelitis: The children may get a sore throat, Fever (UP to 103*F), Vomiting and Headache.
II. Non-Paralytic Poliomyelitis: The children may get a stiff neck, Pain in the extremities, Hypersensitivity of the skin, Fever, Headache.
III. Paralytic Poliomyelitis: The Paralysis is seen in relation to the destruction of the nerve cells. If the anterior horn cell of the spinal cord is damaged, legs, arms, and diaphragm may be paralyzed.
The Polio vaccination program is conducted regularly, every year, with the aim of eradicating completely from the nation. Bring in your children below 5 years of age to the nearest Polio booth for two drops of oral vaccination. This year vaccination program is scheduled on 10th March 2019.
